New Prestige

Chamber of Commerce

It used to have a ring of solidity to it. It was prestigious. Members were proud to be able to afford to be a member. It meant the business had arrived. The business was stable and able to participate more fully in the vitality of the community surrounding the place of business. Is that still true? For many, it is. But... All too often the business people can not be bothered to attend events, the newsletters are not read and services offered by the chamber are not used.

Why? Well, the economy is hot and maybe it is a little to blame. Depending on how you count on it, it has been cooking for ten or eleven years. And in good times, people seem to not need the chamber. The main street business owners have moved to the strip mall. They may be a franchisee or part of a larger management scheme. This may lead to a disconnection with the community around them. With all the good times and all the corporate mergers, it's harder to find the prestige in being a chamber member.

Chambers are doing lots of good things. But they need to speak up about a few really big issues. Most chambers have between 25 and 40 programs, activities and services. Much of the action gets lost in the clutter of doing things. While these are valuable and many will continue to be housed by the chamber, the chamber would be better served if the chamber concentrated its message. If the chamber were known for two or three key initiatives, it would be better respected. Those initiatives need to advocate for the good of businesses in the community setting.

Prestige comes to those organizations that address real needs, take tough stands and see that meaningful change happens.
